Visual Art I (Section 1)

COURSE OVERVIEW

Visual Art I is a foundation course designed to introduce students to observational drawing and painting.  This course will utilize a variety of media to investigate traditional genres, or types, of art.  After an introductory unit on the elements of art and principles of design, students will begin an exploration of increasingly complex works. Projects will move from still lifes, to landscapes, the human form, and ultimately, to portraiture.  As students navigate these genres, they will simultaneously build artistic skill through a variety of two-dimensional modes including drawing, collage, printmaking, and painting.

 

While Visual Art I is designed to develop artistic skill, it is also intended to promote creative thinking and critical looking.  To aid the development of these skills, students will study a master artist and work prior to each project.  They will use the artist and image as inspiration for their own work.  In addition, students will participate in both informal peer reviews and formal critiques that will enhance sensitivity of thought and idea.  Lastly, students will visit local museums to connect the work we are doing with contemporary artists and movements.
