ERHS Calendar - Week 3/11/19

Dear ERHS Students and Community,

We did it! We got to 5061 signatures, as of this morning (Friday, March 8), and now it is in the hands of the Mayor’s Office to make the final determination on the new gym space for our school. I continue to communicate with Councilman Ben Kallos about important updates. I will update the community on any news related to the possibility of the new gym space as soon as I hear. A giant shout out to everyone who signed and got others to sign the petition and make this a reality!

Thank you to everyone who participated in last week’s Family Conferences. I hope they were productive and helpful as we head to the next part of the school year. Thank you also to our faculty, staff, and Class of 2019 members who led presentations for returning students throughout our Academic Planning Fair, during the half day on Friday. There was a buzz in the air as students heard from both teachers and students who have taken these courses about what to expect and areas of interest within the course(s).

A reminder to complete the NYCDOE School Surveys asap, as they were distributed to families and students last week. Your feedback is important to us and every voice matters. Thank you, in advance for completing your survey.

Congrats to the Girls Basketball Team on an epic season. Though they lost to the top seeded team in the B division, Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology, the team had its best season of ever! Thanks to all that came to support the team in their semifinal playoff match on Sunday at York College and throughout the season. We are very proud of the entire team, Coach O’Sullivan and Coach Sperling and congratulate and thank seniors Saniya D., Sadie W. and Mia A. for their contributions, leadership and all out effort throughout their time on the team.

Next weekend, ERHS will host the annual Ben Kallos Chess Tournament, on Saturday, March 16. If interested in volunteering for this event, see Mr. Goncalves, ERHS Chess Coach, in room 401 for more details.

Thank you to PTA Co-President for her letter in this week’s ElRo Corner.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all in the ElRo community who celebrate.

Sincerely,

Mr. Saliani

Principal

ElRo Corner

Dear ERHS Community,

Recently, a friend asked if her daughter, a senior in college, could stay with us a few days as she had some job interviews in the city. I was happy to give this young woman a convenient home base. Her few days with us were unremarkable except for one thing: every time she left for the day she would leave the light on in her bedroom. Energy conservation is something that is near and dear to my heart and I have drilled the importance of turning off the lights in my own kids but, nonetheless, this was a more-than-gentle reminder to me that parenting is overwhelming. There is simply so much that we need to do to prepare our children to be good citizens, partners, and even houseguests. While I feel very proud of my own four children, I still often feel inadequate that I am doing a sufficient job of preparing my children for 'the real world'.

That is why I am so thankful that my son attends Eleanor Roosevelt High School. I think we truly have a sense of community between educators, students, and parents and I have honestly felt that every teacher my son has encountered truly cares not only about his academic success, but his overall well-being. I hope you will agree that ElRo is more than an academic institution and that the educators at ElRo are guided by the greater purpose of providing our children with the keys to character-building. As Eleanor Roosevelt herself once said, "Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life."

Equally important to this purpose is the character and support of our parent community. I am overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of time, energy and talent the parents have given so generously this year. No words can express my deep appreciation for being part of this amazing community of parents and for the opportunity I have had over the past year to get to know and work with so many of you. Thank you for ALL that you have done to make this year so enjoyable, whether it be attending PTA meetings, volunteering for Open House tours, or contributing to the Annual Fund. Equally amazing has been the opportunity to get to know so many of the students. The PTA consistently gets approached by students with fantastic ideas and enthusiasm and nothing feels better than cutting a check to a group of students excited to publish a science magazine or purchasing books for our library that students are eager to read. Intellectual curiosity is alive and well at ElRo! The success of the ERHS athletic teams--particularly the City Champion Girl's Volleyball Team and the undefeated ERHS Girls Basketball Team--is made all the more sweet, knowing that strong parental support helps fund our teams.

We have several events coming up that I encourage all parents to join in to keep the momentum going for a successful year. First, we have a Mom's Night out this Monday, March 11th. Tickets may be purchased here. On Tuesday, April 9th, we will have another community building 'Paint Nite' event at an art studio (details to follow on PTA email blast). We will wind down our fundraising activities on Friday, May 3rd. The Auction is an 'all hands on deck' event. We need 100% participation to shatter last year's record-breaking event. There are two simple things I encourage all parents to do this week: donate (or solicit a donation) and purchase a ticket to attend the event. Donation forms can be found here and please ask a restaurant, favorite shop, salon--even your dentist--for goods or service to donate. We will have a wide variety of items up for bidding so please help out. And, of course, the event will not be a success without strong attendance. Please purchase your ticket here and join us for what is always a fun night of refreshments, dancing, and community.

Thank you again and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Stacey Curry

ERHS PTA Co-President

ATHLETICS

This is the area where you will come to check out the current results and recaps from the latest games. This is also the area where you will look to see when sports interest meetings are planned for the upcoming season.  Remember, if you will be trying out for a team, you will need a current medical form filled out by a doctor, and a parent consent form. You can pick up both forms in the PE Office on the 2nd floor.

LIBRARY & RESOURCE CENTER

As we leave February and take down the Black History Month exhibit, let's not forget to carry forward our understanding that American history encompasses all of our experiences and contributions. They should be continually added to the quilt that must cover us all. These stories need to be told not just for one month, but for all the months of the year. This includes Women's History, which we celebrate this month.

Some of our students have already begun the process of mounting the school-wide display- great job! Ms. Mendlowitz, as usual has many more things to add. To that end, she would love some help. So, CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS! Please come see me in the LRC, if you'd like to “lend a hand."
