ERHS Calendar - Week of 5/6/19

Dear ERHS Students and Community,

Thank you to all in the ERHS community who participated in last week’s PTA Auction. From our organizers on the Auction Committee to all who contributed, attended, donated items and made bids, your support of our school is greatly appreciated.

As May is always a busy month, this week we have several events to share:

Monday - Special shortened Monday Schedule and Faculty Professional Learning at 2:25pm in Room 324

Tuesday - National Honor Society Induction starting at 5:30pm in the Auditorium - Congrats to our inductees, welcome to NHS!

Thursday - Spring Guitar Concert at 6:00pm in the Auditorium - Please join us for the first of four music-based Thursdays in May as our school’s guitar classes share their strumming talents!

We wish our AP class test-takers well in their exams this week. Students with afternoon exams will be provided with a lunch period before or after their exam and are expected to attend their classes on test days. All faculty are reminded to work with students with AP exams this week and adjust regular assessments and classwork accordingly. Thank you all for your cooperation to ensure proper testing conditions during the AP exam period. Exams will continue into next week. See the Events calendar for specifics regarding the AP exam schedule.

Ramadan Mubarak to all in the ERHS community who celebrate.

Happy early Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there!

Sincerely,

Mr. Saliani

Principal

ElRo Corner

Dear ERHS Community,

May is Better Speech and Hearing month and I am challenging you to increase your awareness to the environment and behaviors that may be putting you at risk for hearing and speech difficulties in the future!

Throughout our daily routines, we are constantly exposed to stress, loud sounds, and voice damage. We are balancing our home and school life, listening to music on our phones and straining our voices while we yell to friends or family.  Too often we underestimate the impact of these simple language activities, but did you know that each of these minor behaviors may be putting you at risk for developing speech, hearing or voice problems in the future?

For Example:

  • Noise levels above 75 decibels (dBA) can cause permanent hearing loss over time! This includes the sound of a blow-dryer, music in our headphones, sirens and airplanes (asha.org).

  • Polyps on your vocal folds can develop after one incident of vocal abuse such as shouting at a concert or a sports event (asha.org). Vocal Polyps are bumps on your vocal folds that can cause hoarseness and neck pain.

  • Daily stress may increase your risk of stroke in your lifetime when added to behaviors and conditions such as smoking, high blood pressure, obesity and family history. Stroke can impair a person’s memory, cognition and speech, making communication extremely difficult (cdc.gov). Managing these conditions and being aware of your history can lower your risk.

This month, and throughout the year, challenge yourself to increase awareness to these risk factors that may be exposing you to future damage to your hearing, cognition and communication skills. Taking action to improve your health will ensure that you continue to participate in the communication around us!

Autism Awareness Fundraiser Update:

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who donated to the Autism Awareness Association and sparked discussion around ASD through wearing the puzzle piece bracelet. We were able to surpass our goal and donate a season of adapted Horseback riding lessons and adapted Ballet lessons to families who have a child with Autism.

Sincerely,

Tina Seidita, Speech Pathologist

ATHLETICS

This is the area where you will come to check out the current results and recaps from the latest games. This is also the area where you will look to see when sports interest meetings are planned for the upcoming season.  Remember, if you will be trying out for a team, you will need a current medical form filled out by a doctor, and a parent consent form. You can pick up both forms in the PE Office on the 2nd floor.
