ERHS Calendar - Week of 5/28/19

Dear ERHS Community,

While we recognize those that made the ultimate sacrifice on this Memorial Day, I hope everyone in the ERHS community has a peaceful and reflective holiday. As we return for the final month of school, wishing everyone, in all grades and to all faculty and staff a strong finish and to make the last month of school one that you are proud of, from your own efforts to supporting those around you.

As stated over the P.A. on Friday, after conferring with the ERHS UFT Chapter Consultative Committee (Teachers Union) over the past few weeks, we have an exciting announcement regarding our Advisory Program. Advisory will become a non-credit class with a grade of (P/D/F) in the coming year and restore some of the school-wide expectations to the program, such as community service (20 hours a year) being reviewed by the teacher/advisor. Teachers will also receive additional training in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Restorative Circles work by early next school year, and there will be greater involvement of faculty on all grade levels in the once a week class. We plan to have it meet for all grades during the same special period, not affecting courses. This period will also allow us to have grade and multi-grade assemblies in the auditorium and to allow for greater student voice, in periodic grade level meetings with school leadership and faculty in a town hall setting. The ElRo Sibs program will also continue and we look forward to the next group of students working collaboratively with advisors in this class moving forward.

As end of year events and recognitions continue, we invite you to this week’s STEM Showcase, being held on Wednesday, May 29 in Room 501, at 3:!5pm, to hear and learn from our students who work with Mr. LIn in both Robotics & Engineering class as well as  Advanced STEM Research.

This Thursday, the Music Department continues its Thursday evening series of performances with our Senior Recital, featuring Isabella B., Jordanna P. and Josef S.. Everyone is welcome to join as we enjoy the talents and recognize these soon-to-be grads during this evening of music and community. The recital starts at 5:30pm in the Music Room 201.

Thank you to parent and SLT member, Michelle Best, who has brought a unique and free opportunity for members of the ERHS community to see the acclaimed play, Antigone in Ferguson at St. Ann’s Theater on Saturday, June 8 at 2pm.  Please see the ElRo Corner and sign up using this form. We hope this performance will continue to allow our community to grow through the examination of serious topics related to race and beyond. We are checking for details but there may be as many as 200 free VIP tickets available for this performance.  For more information about the performance, please visit this link, https://www.bklynlibrary.org/Antigone-in-Ferguson.

Wishing everyone a great upcoming week.

Sincerely,

Mr. Saliani

Principal

Seen around ElRo last week: Our photographers have proof this week that groups of people working together can accomplish great things but they also caught moments of concentration and privacy so it's always a great balance and it's always a great week when the balance works! Thank you to our photographers for capturing those moments for us.

Thank you to this week's featured photographers: Michael S, Erica Z, Emma C, Kate S, Lindsay L, Sophia K, Claire S, Sydney K, Carli M, Jordan S. Zara D, Isaac D, Lea G, Matthew C, Rayna A, Sophia A

ElRo Corner

Dear ERHS Community,

Antigone in Ferguson is a groundbreaking project, developed by Theater of War Productions, which fuses dramatic readings by acclaimed actors of Sophocles’ Antigone with live choral music performed by a diverse choir, including police officers, activists, youth, teachers, and concerned citizens from St. Louis, Missouri and New York City, culminating in powerful, healing discussions about race and social justice.  Antigone in Ferguson was conceived in the wake of Michael Brown’s death in 2014.

Given recent events in our own community, we are welcomed to be VIP guests and to have a panelist represent our student body in the discussion following the play. The experience is something that resonates - long after you leave the theatre.

We will plan to tentatively attend on Saturday, June 8 at 2pm.

Please complete the form if interested in attending.

Sincerely,

Ms. Michelle Best

This is also the area where you will look to see when sports interest meetings are planned for the upcoming season.  Remember, if you will be trying out for a team, you will need a current medical form filled out by a doctor, and a parent consent form. You can pick up both forms in the PE Office on the 2nd floor.
