ERHS Calendar - Week of 6/10/19

Dear ERHS Community,

As we reach the final week of school, we continue to enjoy the end of year celebrations in many places in our school. As we recognize Pride Month, we are excited to have a Pride Celebration on Tuesday during periods 2 and 3, including an assembly with a special guest speaker, Ms. Samantha Kay, arranged by our GSA. As this is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, we will place special attention on educating our student body about this important historical event in the LGBTQ+ movement. Please see the first of two ElRo Corners, written by Liesel B., President of the GSA for more information. We stand shoulder to shoulder with all our students and support the work that needs to be done to raise awareness and support our LGBTQ+ community at ERHS and beyond. All families are welcome to attend our assemblies on Tuesday as well, with each assembly being about 45 minutes, at 8:45am and 9:30am.

Families are also encouraged to attend our Annual Art Showcase on Tuesday, June 11 from 3:30-5:30pm. Come see all the amazing art projects completed in the various art classes from Digital Photography to Visual Arts to Ceramics and beyond!  On Tuesday evening at 5pm we will have our final School Leadership Team meeting for the year. We will be discussing our goals for the coming year and reviewing school survey data to inform these goals. This meeting is open to the ERHS community.

On Wednesday, ERHS will host the annual Film Fest & Drama Club Showcase, from 3:15-5:30pm in the auditorium. We encourage all in the community to come check it out. See student created films and a live performance!

On Thursday, we will host the ERHS Talent Show and share the Student Government election results. This event will start at 3:15pm. Wishing all the candidates well in their campaigns. Students check your erhs email accounts for more information on the elections and to cast your ballot. Don’t forget to vote!

Speaking of elections, we will have our final PTA meeting of the year on Thursday, with PTA elections for several positions taking place. Thank you to all the ERHS PTA candidates and we look forward to continuing the fine work of this year’s PTA leadership! All in the community are invited to participate in this election.

Last week we welcomed our new students and families to the school community during the Class of 2023 orientation. At this meeting, all new students received a copy of the school-wide reading, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. This powerful story of resilience, ingenuity and passion for learning in the face of many challenges, will allow the ERHS community to learn more about life in a faraway place (the country of Malawi) and inspire all of us to be more informed about our world and expand our horizons. All returning students will get a copy of the text and it will be distributed shortly. All faculty/staff have also received a copy of this text. We hope all families also read it and when we return to school in September be ready to discuss!

The final day of classes will be this Friday, June 14. Monday, June 17, is a school day for all and we will have a special program as it is the beginning of the Regents testing schedule. All students taking the LOTE exam should be at ERHS at 8:30am. All other students should be at ERHS by 9am as there will be special reviews for Regents exams occurring throughout the day. Those taking the LOTE will join the reviews after the exam and lunch. All Seniors will have rehearsal for Commencement at 9am in the auditorium followed by a special activity. Graduates will also get their tickets for Commencement and their Caps and Gowns. Commencement is Friday, June 21 at 2pm at the 92nd Street Y.  We will send this special schedule out shortly and post to the website. After the final day of attendance, Monday, June 17, the Regents Testing Week will be from Tuesday June 18 - Tuesday June 25. The final day for all students is Wednesday, June 26 to collect report cards and diplomas for graduates..

We have a bonus ElRo Corner this week from the editors of the ElRo Experiment. Enjoy!

Wishing all of you a strong finish to the school year.

Sincerely,

Mr. Saliani

Principal

ElRo Corner #1

Dear Eleanor Roosevelt Community,

As many of you might already know, June is Pride month! The LGBTQ+ community is taking this month to celebrate their own community and to raise awareness for the discrimination still facing them. The reason that the LGBTQ+ community has Pride Month is because throughout the year, they are often not recognized, celebrated, or represented. We need Pride Month because LGBTQ+ are oppressed in our own country and throughout the world.

This year is the 50th year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, in which Sylvia Rivera and Martha P Johnson led the LGBTQ+ community in a protest against the police raids of gay bars. And so, this year, the school’s GSA has decided to make Pride Month at ElRo a bit different. We have decided to decorate our school with decorations to celebrate the community, and we also have some school wide activities planned.

On Tuesday, June 11th, we will be having a school wide celebration of Pride Month. In period 2, ninth and tenth graders will report to the auditorium to listen to our wonderful guest speaker in the auditorium. 11th and 12th graders will go to their regular classrooms to engage in discussions about the LGBTQ+ community. For 3rd period, the two groups will switch, and the 9th and 10th graders will report to their 3rd period rooms.

I hope everyone has a great last week of classes and we look forward to a month full of pride!

Liesel B.

President of GSA

ElRo Corner #2

Dear ERHS Community,

The spring issue of the ElRo Experiment Magazine has been printed! We welcome all of you to take time to read some of the wonderful articles that have been written by our amazing writers. The articles include innovating issues, breakthroughs, and discoveries in the scientific world. As students, we strive to become a larger part of this scientific experience, delve into the science that excites us, and share that joy with you.

Do you wonder how we can delay the effects of climate change? How we can prevent the collapse of the Great Barrier Reef? Find out more by reading on….

If you would like to have a copy of the ElRo Experiment, see Ms. Mendlowitz in the LRC, Room 511, or find Elisa or Alex while they are distributing them!

To contribute to the ElRo Experiment, you may: write articles/sci-fi stories, create art/brain teasers/ puzzles that revolve around science, or take pictures relating to science for the covers of the magazine!

If you are interested in contributing to the ElRo Experiment for the 2019-2020 school year, email Ms. Mendlowitz at hmendlowitz@erhsnyc.net.

We hope you all have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,

Elisa S. and Alex F.

Presidents of ElRo Experiment Club at ERHS
