ERHS Calendar - Week of 6/17/19

Dear ERHS Community,

Throughout the past week, I have visited Social Studies classrooms of returning students, after meeting our incoming freshmen/sophomores last week during Orientation, to share our school-wide summer reading. Every student and faculty/staff member has been given a copy of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. The book chronicles the life of young WIlliam growing up in Malawi during the early 2000's and his resiliency and ingenuity in the face of real life challenges. Thank you to our PTA for purchasing copies for all students/faculty/staff!

Click here to see a TED talk by William Kamkwamba in 2009 to get a better idea about the book and his story. His story has also been made into a Netflix movie, click here for the trailer. See Moving Windmills for additional information. I am hopeful that we can expand this opportunity of reading this powerful narrative to share our own personal narratives with one another while continuing to build bonds within our community. I hope all families also read it and you can discuss as a family about the book. I hope you all enjoy this inspirational story of resilience.

At our final PTA meeting I shared some news regarding next year’s schedule. In order for us to strengthen our Advisory program, it will once again be an official class. After conferring with both faculty and students it became a priority to find a way to make this possible. Advisors will be playing a more direct role, working collaboratively with ElRo Sibs to discuss Social Emotional Learning topics, with training from Morningside Center planned for the fall. The course will be a non-credit but graded class (will appear on transcripts) as a Pass/Fail class. Our community service requirement (20 hours a school year) will also be submitted through advisory to the advisor. Students may complete up to 10 hours in advance of the school year. School service can count for up to 10 hours. We hope these changes bring about stronger community bonds for all at ERHS.

Also at our final PTA meeting, new members of the PTA leadership were elected and we welcome the new PTA Executive Board members to the team. Here are is the PTA leadership for the 2019-20 school year. Co-Presidents -  Stacey Curry and Virginia Kindred, 1st V.P. Scott Goldman, 2nd V.P. Michele Samarel, Treasurer Brigida Kola, Assistant Treasurer Natalie Rosenthal, Secretary Nancy Morris, Assistant Secretary Melanie Greifer, 12th Grade Reps Denise Freiberg and Darian Levin, 11th Grade Reps Hope Goldstein and Ignazio Leone, 10th Grade Reps Ahou Abroon and Beth Hirschorn, SLT (2 Open Positions for 2-year term) Ahou Abroon and Elisa Bourbin,  SLT (Returning for 2nd year of 2-year term) Michelle Best and Beth Redler.

There are also three SLT student positions open for the 2019-20. If interested in being considered, please send a brief letter of interest to Ms. Maryellen Teaman at mteaman@erhsnyc.net by Monday, June 17 at 3pm. All students that have already reached out are set. We will contact candidates about the next step in the selection process shortly.

Congratulations to Ms. Adrienne Rubin (Science Department) who will be retiring at the end of the year. I want to personally thank her for her many years of service to ERHS and her previous students. She has contributed to the school community in so many ways as an advisor to many clubs, including National Honor Society and Making a Difference. Her dedication to her students and her love of Science has been a pleasure to witness over the years. She will be sorely missed!

Congratulations to Ms. Allyson Genova Hall, who was named Principal of St. Ann’s Personal School in East Harlem for the coming year. Please join me in congratulating Ms. Genova-Hall on her new position! She will be sorely missed and will always be a part of the ElRo family. Her work with students in her role as Community Liaison over the past years has been such an important part of our preparation for students entering the world and sharing the need to give back to one’s community and far beyond. Her positive energy and supportive nature with both kids and adults was felt far and wide by our community. Best to you Ally G.!  Welcome to the principalship!

Thank you to Ms. Yanying Wang for her efforts this past year as a first year Math teacher at ERHS. Ms. Wang will be moving out of NYC and leaving ERHS at the end of the year. Wishing you well in the next step in your career!
