ERHS Calendar - Week of 9/16/19

Dear ERHS Community,

As we hit the second full week of school, I hope everyone is settling into their groove. Class changes came to a conclusion last week and we look forward to the beginning of before/after school offerings in the coming days. I had a productive meeting with the leaders of Student Government last week and we decided to have an after school Club Fair on Tuesday 9/24, starting immediately after 9th period. All club advisors and leaders are encouraged to participate. We will use the second floor for this fair. Please check out the emails sent on behalf of Student Government to share your thoughts and availability to serve on special committees as well.

More importantly we also discussed the current admissions policy related to equity and access, as I did with members of the Equity Club last week as well. For the past two years we have started and stopped this conversation at different junctures and at this time, we plan to further the conversation at our School Leadership Team meeting this Tuesday evening at 5pm in the Library. We will update the community on our ideas and hope all support any revisions to the current admissions framework. I have discussed the proposed changes with our Superintendent, Executive Superintendent and received support form them, while I’ve met with other principals at screened schools in our district who are considering similar proposals.  We continue to move towards making the admissions process more equitable and increasing access for more students at all screened schools in our district.

This coming week, all 9th-11th grade students will have their individual portraits taken, as well as all advisory group pictures on Tuesday, 9/17, throughout the day. This week we will also continue to practice evacuation drills and urge everyone to be ready for them and upcoming lockdown drills as well.

This Thursday-Friday our entire 9th grade will be headed for the overnight trip to the FDR Presidential Library & Museum and Ramapo Camp in Rhinebeck, NY. The trip will include learning about the Roosevelts, while we spend the morning in Hyde Park, and then continue to the camp, with various planned  team building and whole grade activities. Please refer to the permission slip for what to bring on the trip. Check the Forms page on the website if you need access to the permission slip. We have reviewed all special needs/dietary restrictions for participating students.  Families can rest assured that all faculty chaperones will be trained and prepared to support all our students, while they grow together, in the ultimate ElRo ice-breaker. We look forward to an amazing trip, full of learning, fun and taking on group and individual challenges. On the return date from the trip (Friday 9/20), there is a special 9th grade New Family Welcome, planned by our PTA, starting at 1pm at ERHS. All 9th grade families are welcome to come to the ERHS library for this special adult ice-breaker, led by our PTA leadership, as we wait for the trip attendees to return. Students and staff are scheduled to arrive between 2-2:30pm from the trip and will be immediately dismissed, so please coordinate with your children, if you plan to attend the family gathering.

All families should have received an invite to volunteer for high school fairs (including next weekend) and our Fall Open Houses, this past Friday, from Parent Coordinator Zanaiya Moore. If interested in volunteering for these special informational events, please complete the attached survey and we will be in touch shortly. Students, be on the lookout for the email sent by ElRo Ambassadors leader Layla A. last week to volunteer as well. We thank you in advance for your participation.  Open house registration will open on the morning of Monday, 9/16 for all interested in attending an open house. The first one will be on Wednesday, 10/2.

Good luck to all our fall sports teams as the Fall PSAL season is in full swing. Congrats to our soccer teams and Girls Tennis Team on their fast starts last week. All teams won their games/matches. Wishing them and our City Champion Girls Volleyball team, who embark on their season shortly, success this season. Also well wishes to our Girls Cross Country team and ERHS students participating in East Harlem Pride football team. Please visit the school website for information on all PSAL news or click here for school’s PSAL site.

ElRo Corner

Dear ERHS Families,

Our tech club will be starting this week as many clubs get going. What is tech club and what is new with technology at ElRo this year?

First, thank you to the PTA, for the new teacher laptops. They will support the current software that we use everyday in instruction in our classes.

Next, did you know that all NYCDOE students and families have free access to the Microsoft Office Suite? Simply go to:
https://www.nycstudents.net/ and complete the form to have access to Office 365 Education for Students which includes Office 365 ProPlus. This allows students to install up to 5 copies of the latest Microsoft Office suite for their PCs and Macs and up to five copies for their iOS or Android devices.

We are also thrilled to welcome home, Guy Liotto, ERHS ‘15, who is our CUNY tech intern this year and will be supporting faculty and sharing with our current students his interests in technology use and data systems.

Led by our co-presidents, Rayan M. and Nikiforos P., Tech Club is starting up again every Wednesday afternoon after school. Tech club is a time and place for all students to explore using technology for personal creative and class projects. If you need help or just want company to share you interests, stop by 518 any Wednesday after school. From Photoshop to 3D printing, digital embroidery, knitting, crocheting, collage and almost anything - we have materials old tech and new tech to share. All are welcome. Come make something!

-Ms. Ettenheim and Tech Club
