ERHS Calendar - Week of 9/23/19

Dear ERHS Community,

As this week closes out the month of September, we welcome back the Class of 2023 from the 9th grade trip to Ramapo Camp for Children and the FDR Presidential Library & Museum. All that attended worked together, supported one another, performed at our talent show, navigated unexpected realities with patience and return to school, having built new friendships and having a shared experience that brought the class further together. Thank you to all the chaperones for their participation and support of the class.

Last week also marked the #ClimateStrike, where youth from all over the world gathered to raise awareness and a call to action, to demand our leaders act responsibly regarding the need to take better care of our planet. Almost 200 ERHS students participated in this protest, in downtown Manhattan, joining thousands of others, sharing their voices in a powerful manner. Let’s all think about how we, as individuals, and collectively, to make environmental friendly choices, from how we can use less, waste less, and be “greener”.

Last week, as mentioned in the previous calendar letter, the School Leadership Team met for the first meeting of the year. We discussed possible proposals to revise the current admissions process, including looking at how the candidate pool would more balanced with changes to our current admissions policy of a 90 in all four core classes (7th grade) and 3-4 testing, fewer than 10 absences and 10 lateness. We looked at some slight alterations to this current system and believe we are on the right track with examining how the proposals will allow for greater diversity to the student body, a call that many in our school community believe is a priority, including me. We will share more about this at future PTA meetings and student gatherings. The current policy will remain for this year, but we hope to further review/examine proposals for the following year.

This week, we welcome all ERHS families to our Curriculum Night, 5:00-6:40pm, followed by our first PTA meeting, 6:45-7:30pm. During Curriculum Night, all families will have a chance to meet advisors, teachers, staff and administration during this evening. Please plan to arrive a few minutes before 5pm, to receive further information about the evening.

Thanks to our volunteers (students and families) who attended this weekend’s high school fairs at George Washington Educational Campus in Upper Manhattan, with Ms. Corbett and Ms. Witt. Please contact Ms. Zanaiya Moore, Parent Coordinator, at zmoore@erhsnyc.net, if interested in volunteering for upcoming fairs or open houses. See the email that was sent out by Ms. Moore and complete the survey. We thank you for your participation.

Good luck to all our fall sports teams as the Fall PSAL season is in full swing. Congrats to our soccer teams (Girls 4-0 and Boys 4-0 records) and Girls Tennis Team (3-1) who continue their great starts to the season.  Our Girls Volleyball lost their opener last week but look to get into the win column this week. Good luck to all our student athletes who are participating in fall sports. Please visit the school website for information on all PSAL news or click here for school’s PSAL site.

The Renovated Home is a design and build firm that works in high-end residential projects all over NYC.  If you have any interest in the renovation or restoration of buildings, staging homes for photo shoots, or learning about the various trades necessary for renovation, this could be an amazing opportunity for you!

Apply for the CUE Teen Collective - Applications due September 28th at 4:00pm

The CUE Teen Collective is a free, year-long after school program designed for NYC high school students who are passionate about visual culture and interested in exploring careers in the fine arts. With behind-the-scenes access to the New York art world, the CTC demystifies career paths available to students, while inspiring them to develop their own personal artistic voices. During talks with artists and curators, trips to gallery and museum shows, visits to art fairs, and hands-on studio sessions, students will have the opportunity to ask questions of working arts professionals about their careers and practices, learning about various approaches to a sustainable and rewarding career in the arts.

LIBRARY & RESOURCE CENTER

Well, the painting is done, and the new carpeting is down. All we need is the new furniture.

Meanwhile, the space is usable. Next week the desktop computers will all be connected to the printer.

While most of the book collection is packed away, new books are arriving and are displayed and shelved all around the circulation desk- some great reads, including graphic novels and nonfiction, and some sports titles:

  • K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches
  • SprawlBall: A Visual Tour of the New Era of the NBA

Ms. Mendlowitz is grateful to see so many of you back in the LRC again, and thrilled to see so many new faces. The games, squeezies and Chinese yo-yos are out. Laptops are charged and ready to go. Come one; come all- the LRC’s the place to be.

The first cartoon contest of the year will be posted this week- yeah!

Both pages also provide portals/directories of other community service (“Teen Life”) and internship opportunities (Chegg). Be sure to check the “Latest Opportunities” pages on both pages.

Finally, at the bottom of the Community Service homepage is a link to the “2019-20 Service Learning Document.” Make a copy for yourself, so you can type your intormation into the required fields for submission to your advisors. Handwritten submissions will NOT be accepted. This must me done after each marking period. Remember, you are required to complete five hours of community service per marking period (20 hours per year). The homepage answers other FAQs.
